What is Throw Ratio?

The ratio between the distance of the projector from the screen and the width of the projected image.

Definition

Throw ratio describes the distance a projector needs to be from the screen to produce an image of a certain width. For example, a ratio of 1.0 means the projector needs to be 1 foot away for every 1 foot of image width. A small throw ratio (e.g., 0.2) indicates an "ultra-short throw" projector, while a larger ratio (e.g., 1.5) indicates a "long throw" projector, determining placement flexibility.

Why It Matters

Crucial for determining where the projector needs to be placed in your room relative to the screen, impacting room layout and installation flexibility.

What to Look For

Values below 0.4 are ideal for ultra-short throw (placed very close); values between 0.4 and 1.0 for short throw; values above 1.0 for standard throw.
